Connections

Text to Text

- "Flying Solo" by Sienna Mercer. We chose this book because in the book, Ivy who is a teen vampire is attending a school that her grandparents forced her to go. She is also struggling with gaining the acceptance of her grandparents when she decides to leace. This is just like Amir who joined soccer, only because Baba forced him to and because he does not want to dissapoint his father. However, in the end they both end up quitting or leave in Ivy's case.

- "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" by John Boyne. It is similar in the way that there are two different classes you could say, but the two boys do not care and become really close friends. Also in "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas", Bruno comes from a wealthy family with servants, just like Amir. Amir and Bruno both befriend people who are complete opposites from them in order of wealth, and race/religion.

- A book similar to the Kite Runner is, “the Invisible Bridge”. I think that they are both similar in a way because they go through family struggles. Amir and Hassan both do not have mothers because of different reasons so they have to go through a hard time without their mothers.

Text to World

- The story about Caitlin Forrest, who was a jockey or a horse racer, who got thrown off her horse, trampled by the other horses and then died. This is just like in the book when Amir and Baba go watch the horse racer and a chapandaz was thrown off his horse and trampled to death.

- The Holocaust really reminded me and is similar to the Hazarans getting persecuted by the Pashtuns. The Holocaust was about the Jews getting persecuted. They are similar to each other because it is a group of people getting killed.

Text to Life

- In the Kite Runner, Amir and Hassan have a great friendship. In the first three chapters (especially the second chapter), we can tell that Amir and Hassan alwasy have each others' back. There was a time in my life where I had a friend that always was with me and had my back. We stood up for each other and never let each other down. When Hassan was getting bullied by the soldier, Amir told him to just keep walking. My friend always told me to ignore the hate and keep walking forward.

AJ's Journal

In the beginning of the chapter the narrator, Amir, tells you a flashback about his past. This flashback really showed and opened my eyes as to who Amir is. We think that the purpose of the flashbacks was to show us how Afghanistan was like before it changed. We also think that the flashbacks were there to tell us what the characters are like.

It helped me understand Amir but really what the book is all about. It gave me more details and insights on the setting. It also foreshadowed to what will happen.

Predictions

1) We will get more stories and flashbakcs about Amir and Hassan. 2) We will learn why Afghanistan changed forever. 3) Why he left Afghanistan. 4) We will finally know if Amir went back to Afghanistan.

Opinions

Baba

Baba is a well-respected businessman, he is wealthy. He has self-assurance and bravery. He is independent and wont let anyone stop him from accomplishing his goals. Amir is intelligent, sensitive and has courage. He can sometimes be acting as a loyal friend towards his friend, Hassan or attacking his friend. Ali, he is a poor man. He does not like to express his emotions. Hassan, he is a loyal friend to Amir. He is brave, selflessness, and intelligent. Rahim Khan, acts like a father figure towards Amir. He defends Amir when Baba says things about Amir. He is a very good guy in the story. He makes sure Amir is noticed.

Ali

Ali's face and his walk frightened some of the younger children in the neighborhood. But the real trouble was with the older kids. They chased him on the street, and mocked him when he hobbled by. Some had taken to calling him _Babalu_, or Boogeyman.

"Hey,Babalu, who did you eat today?"they barked to a chorus of laughter. "Who did you eat, you flat--‐nosed Babalu?" This part in the story was really realistic, because it showed how, poor Ali had polio and that a lot of kids teased him on the way he walked. And he was also teased by his looks. He was also called names like Babalu or Boogeyman. But he did not issue any fights back.
